The Golden Lion was formerly a public house. Prior to that it was in the ownership of the Crawshay family who owned local ironworks. It has a chequered history, with bare-knuckle fighting being popular entertainment here and was known locally as the Bucket of Blood!
When we bought the house a few years ago we intended to do a lot of work on it come retirement. Unfortunately serious illness means these plans are cancelled.
Some work has been done but there is a lot left to do, hence the price.
The house has five bedrooms and a bathroom, plus two attic spaces. The bathroom has a beautifully finished stone wall plus a large, new shower and two Velux windows. One of the bedrooms retains some of the original wall decoration dating back 200 years. The largest bedroom has exposed ceiling beams and the potential for a large en-suite wash area. Downstairs there are four large rooms, a sun room (needs improvement) and a kitchen. All rooms need work on walls and floors, but one of the rooms is in very poor repair, needing a joist,new floor, plastering, etc. The stairs are original and need replacing. The kitchen has no furniture and would benefit from knocking through into the next room to make a large kitchen and dining room. The large front living room has a new multi-fuel stove in a large open fireplace. Gas central heating includes large radiators in the cellars. There are fireplaces in all the rooms, even the bathroom. There are new windows at the front of the house but the back ones all need replacing. Underneath, old beer cellars stretch around beneath the house providing loads of space for storage, toolrooms, workshop etc. There is a toilet and Belfast sink in the utility room adjacent to the cellers.
The house is semi-detached and shares a half acre of garden with next door. In the garden there is a greenhouse, one of each 200 year old maple and chestnut trees intertwined and dominating the bottom of the garden, loads of shrubs and trees and is bordered by the river Cynon. It is a wonderful garden for children.
The back of the house is south-facing and is a joy in the summer. (The neighbours are nice, too!)
With the right, sympathetic people, this house could blossom and fulfil its potential.
